How to install EVA fenders on a dock? Step-by-step instructions

EVA dock fenders must be mechanically fastened using screws, bolts or anchors suited to the dock's construction. The fasteners should be used together with wide washers, which distribute pressure over a larger area of the foam.

Wherever the material and surface of the dock allow it, the manufacturer recommends additionally using a flexible adhesive resistant to moisture, sunlight, frost and changing weather conditions. Combining mechanical fastening with gluing increases the fender's stability and reduces the load on the points where the screws are located.

The most important stages of correct installation are:

  1. determining the actual zone of contact between the hull and the dock
  2. checking the construction and material of the base
  3. a trial layout of the fenders
  4. preparing and cleaning the surface
  5. applying suitable adhesive, if used
  6. carrying out the mechanical fastening
  7. checking the pressure and stability of the whole system

Why is correct installation so important?

A fender only works properly when it is placed at the actual point of hull-to-dock contact and is stably connected to the dock's structure.

Installation mistakes can lead to:

  • the fender shifting
  • screws pulling out
  • excessive crushing of the foam
  • deformation of the material around the washers
  • exposed sections of the hard structure
  • the hull striking above or below the fender
  • the product detaching from an improperly prepared surface

A wide fender mounted at the wrong height can protect worse than a smaller model correctly positioned in the boat's contact zone.

What to prepare before installation?

The range of tools needed depends on the material the dock is made of. Most often you will need:

  • a tape measure
  • a spirit level or line laser
  • a pencil or marker
  • a drill or screwdriver
  • drill bits matched to wood, metal or concrete
  • suitable screws, bolts, anchors or dowels
  • wide washers matched to the fender's mounting holes
  • corrosion-resistant mounting elements
  • a cleaning and degreasing agent for the surface
  • adhesive intended for EVA and the specific dock material
  • protective gloves
  • material for removing excess adhesive

Before starting work, you should also check the technical data sheet for the specific fender model, as well as the manufacturer's instructions for the chosen adhesive and fasteners.

Step 1. Check the condition of the dock structure

The fender should be fastened to a stable structural element. It should not be mounted solely onto a loose, thin or damaged cladding layer.

Before installation, check whether:

  • the wood is not rotten or cracked
  • the steel is not heavily corroded
  • the aluminium is not deformed or weakened
  • the concrete does not crumble at the planned drilling point
  • the composite boards have adequate support
  • there is a structural element behind the cladding that allows safe fastening

If necessary, the surface should first be repaired or reinforced. The fender itself will not improve the load capacity of a damaged dock.

Step 2. Determine the correct mounting height

The mounting height should not be determined solely based on the top edge of the dock.

It's best to determine it with the boat moored in its normal position. You should check where the hull is closest to the structure during:

  • rocking of the vessel
  • the effect of wind
  • boarding and disembarking
  • changes in line tension
  • small changes in water level
  • approaching the mooring spot

The fender should cover the whole expected contact zone. In marinas serving different vessels, it may be necessary to use a wider model or to mount elements at more than one height.

At fixed waterfronts, larger changes in water level must be taken into account. At floating docks, the relative position of the hull and the dock usually changes within a smaller range.

Step 3. Do a trial layout without drilling

Before making any holes, it's worth laying out all the fenders in their planned position and checking whether they:

  • form an even line
  • cover the whole contact zone
  • correctly connect with the corners
  • don't leave dangerous gaps
  • don't collide with cleats, ladders, posts and installations
  • have properly protected section ends
  • have mounting holes falling on stable structural elements

At this stage, you should mark the line of the top or bottom edge of the fender and the position of the mounting points.

Only after checking the whole layout should drilling begin.

Step 4. Clean and prepare the surface

The surface of the dock and the back of the fender should be:

  • clean
  • dry
  • free of dust
  • free of oil, grease and loose coatings
  • properly prepared for the type of adhesive used

Loose fibres, flaking paint and dirt should be removed from wood. Steel should be cleaned of loose rust. Concrete must not be dusty or crumbling. Aluminium and composite surfaces should be prepared according to the adhesive manufacturer's recommendations.

Random aggressive solvents that could damage the EVA foam must not be used. Before using a cleaning agent, test it on a small, inconspicuous piece of material.

Step 5. Choose the right fasteners

The type of screws, bolts, anchors and dowels depends on the dock's construction.

The fasteners should:

  • be corrosion-resistant
  • have a length suited to the thickness of the fender and the base
  • provide stable anchoring
  • work together with wide washers
  • have no sharp, protruding edges
  • be suitable for a humid or marine environment

A screw must not end in empty space, nor should it hold the fender only by a thin finishing layer.

In a marine environment, pay particular attention to the fasteners' corrosion resistance and the compatibility of different metals.

What washers should be used?

Wide washers distribute the fastener's pressure over a larger area and limit how deeply the head sinks into the foam.

For the MARINA 8 and MARINA 12 models, washers matched to holes about 15 mm in diameter are used.

For the other models in the system, larger washers are used, usually matched to holes about 25 mm in diameter. The final size should always be checked in the specific product's technical data sheet.

A washer that's too small can cut into the material. One that's too large may not fit correctly into the prepared mounting hole.

Step 6. Drill the mounting holes

The way the holes are made depends on the dock material.

Before drilling, make sure the structure doesn't contain:

  • electrical cables
  • water pipes
  • control elements
  • hidden bolts and connectors
  • buoyancy tanks of a floating dock

Holes should be drilled perpendicular to the surface and have a diameter matched to the fastener being used.

Do not enlarge holes in the foam by tearing the material. Any additional holes should be made cleanly with a sharp tool, without damaging the fender's structure.

The spacing and number of mounting points should match the prepared holes and the technical data sheet for the specific model. Do not reduce the recommended number of fasteners on your own.

Step 7. Apply additional adhesive

The manufacturer recommends additional gluing wherever the type of base, the dock's construction and the installation conditions allow it.

The adhesive creates an additional bond between the back of the fender and the dock. This means loads are not carried solely by a few mechanical fastening points.

Gluing can:

  • limit the fender's movement
  • reduce material stress around the screws
  • improve adhesion to the surface
  • increase the stability of long sections
  • reduce the chance of dirt getting between the fender and the dock

Adhesive supplements mechanical fastening — it is not an automatic substitute for it.

What type of adhesive should be used?

Adhesives that can be used for installing EVA fenders include, among others:

Flexible MS Polymer or SMP mounting adhesives

These are single-component adhesives based on silane-modified polymers. Once cured, they remain flexible and can be intended for outdoor use.

The chosen product should:

  • be compatible with EVA foam
  • adhere to the dock material
  • be moisture-resistant
  • remain flexible at sub-zero temperatures
  • be resistant to weather conditions
  • not cause degradation of the material

Adhesives of this type often need to be applied in vertical strips or spots so that moisture can reach the adhesive layer. Do not automatically cover the whole surface with a uniform, thick layer.

Contact adhesives based on synthetic rubber

These can only be used when their manufacturer confirms compatibility with EVA, the specific base and outdoor conditions.

Contact adhesives are usually applied to both surfaces being joined. Before joining them, the solvent needs to evaporate adequately.

Not every rubber-based adhesive is suitable for year-round outdoor use. Check its resistance to water, temperature, sunlight and prolonged exposure to moisture.

How to apply adhesive correctly?

The application method depends on the specific product's technology. Always follow its technical instructions.

Most often you need to:

  1. clean and dry both surfaces
  2. test the adhesive's compatibility with EVA
  3. apply the adhesive in strips, spots or to both surfaces — according to the instructions
  4. maintain the required layer thickness
  5. join the elements within the correct time window
  6. ensure adequate pressure
  7. not load the joint before it has fully cured

Excess adhesive should be removed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Trying to remove cured product with a sharp tool can damage the fender's surface.

Step 8. Fasten the fender mechanically

Once the fender is positioned correctly, fit the fasteners one by one.

Screws or bolts should be tightened gradually. It's best to start with the centre points, then move to the subsequent fastening points, checking the alignment of the whole element as you go.

The washer should hold the fender firmly in place but must not sink deeply into the foam.

A correctly installed fender:

  • doesn't shift
  • adheres to the surface
  • keeps its original shape
  • isn't wrinkled
  • isn't overly stretched
  • doesn't have deeply sunken washers
  • forms an even line with neighbouring elements

Why shouldn't screws be over-tightened?

EVA foam is a flexible material. Over-tightening can cause:

  • permanent indentation of the surface
  • reduced fender thickness at the fastening point
  • the washer cutting through the material
  • weakening of the mounting hole
  • localised stress and cracking
  • a deteriorated appearance of the finished section

The screw should hold the fender in place, but it shouldn't act like a clamp crushing the foam.

After finishing installation, recheck all the points and compare how deeply the washers have sunk in.

Installation on different dock materials

Installation on a wooden dock

Before installation, check that the boards and structural elements are sound, dry and stable.

It's best to fasten the fender to an element of adequate thickness, not solely to a thin finishing board.

Choose construction screws for wood that are resistant to moisture and corrosion. Depending on the type of wood and the diameter of the screws, pilot holes may be necessary.

A pilot hole:

  • makes it easier to position the screw correctly
  • reduces the risk of the wood cracking
  • reduces resistance during installation
  • helps avoid twisting and shifting the fender

Gluing is possible if the wood is properly prepared, stable and free of flaking coatings.

Installation on a steel dock

For steel, suitably chosen self-drilling screws or bolted connections are most often used.

You should take into account:

  • the thickness of the steel profile
  • access to the back of the structure
  • the condition of the anti-corrosion protection
  • the possibility of water entering the holes
  • the corrosion resistance of the fasteners

Drilling points may need to be re-protected against corrosion. Do not mount the fender onto thin, corroded sheet metal that doesn't provide adequate load capacity.

Before gluing, the steel should be cleaned, degreased and prepared according to the adhesive's requirements.

Installation on an aluminium dock

Installation on aluminium requires taking into account the risk of galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals are in contact in the presence of moisture.

Fasteners should be matched to the structure and the environment of use. If necessary, use suitable spacers or insulating protection for the connection.

Do not use random screws, which could lead to accelerated corrosion of the profile.

Before gluing, the aluminium surface must be prepared according to the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. Some products may require a suitable primer to increase adhesion.

Installation on concrete

Fenders mounted on concrete require dowels or anchors intended for this type of base.

Before drilling, check:

  • the condition of the concrete
  • the distance of the hole from the edge
  • the anchoring depth
  • the possible presence of reinforcement
  • the anchor's suitability for a humid environment

Do not drill holes into a crumbling, cracked or heavily weakened section of the waterfront.

Dust generated during drilling must be thoroughly removed. This matters both for correctly seating the anchor and for the adhesive's adhesion.

Installation on a composite or plastic dock

A composite board is not always a structural element. It's often only cladding fastened to load-bearing profiles.

The fender should be connected to the structural element located behind the cladding. Simply screwing into a thin board may not be sufficient.

You should also check that the chosen adhesive is compatible with the specific plastic. Some materials have low surface energy and require special preparation, a primer, or a different type of adhesive.

Installing linear fenders

MARINA linear fenders are 100 cm long and can be mounted individually or one next to another.

When laying out a longer section, you should:

  • mark a common mounting line
  • check the height of each element
  • not leave large gaps
  • maintain continuity of protection
  • account for natural expansion and movement of the dock structure
  • protect the beginning and end of the section
  • connect the system with appropriate corner pieces

Small height differences between successive fenders can create edges that the hull could catch on. That's why each successive element should be positioned relative to the previous one.

Installing corner fenders

A corner is particularly exposed to impacts when approaching the mooring spot.

The corner element should:

  • accurately cover the hard edge
  • be matched to the width of the linear fenders
  • form a continuous protective surface
  • be fastened on both sides of the corner
  • have no exposed or protruding fasteners

Before drilling any holes, hold the corner piece in place and check whether the angle and dimensions of the dock match the shape of the product.

If the corner of the structure is irregular, individual preparation of the surface, or the use of an element matched to that specific dock, may be necessary.

Installing the MARINA Y-Boom fender

MARINA Y-Boom is used to protect the ends of narrow finger docks.

Before installation, check:

  • the width of the finger dock's end
  • the radius or profile of its front part
  • the possibility of stable fastening on both sides
  • the position of the supporting structure
  • the expected point of hull impact

The fender's profiled back should fit as closely as possible to the end of the finger dock.

Y-Boom should be mounted symmetrically. Shifting it to one side may leave part of the hard structure unprotected.

Given where it's used, a strong mechanical connection is especially important, along with additional gluing if the finger dock's material allows it.

Can fenders be cut?

EVA foam can be cut to adjust the length of an element to a specific section of dock.

For cutting, use:

  • a very sharp knife
  • a band saw
  • a suitable fine-toothed saw
  • a professional foam-cutting tool

Before cutting, mark the line precisely and support the material stably.

The cut should be even, without tearing or ripping the structure. You should also check that shortening the product won't remove a necessary mounting point.

For protecting corners and ends, it's better to use elements specifically designed for these locations rather than randomly cutting down a linear fender.

Installing the caps

Once installation is complete, the holes with screws and washers can be covered with matching EVA caps.

The caps:

  • improve the fender's appearance
  • limit dirt getting into the holes
  • cover the metal fasteners
  • give the whole system a uniform look

Before inserting a cap, check that the screw and washer are correctly seated. A cap must not be used to hide a fastening that's been over-tightened or is loose.

The most common installation mistakes

Installing at the wrong height The fender is positioned above or below the actual point of hull contact.

Fastening to unstable cladding The screws are held only by a thin board, corroded sheet metal, or a loose finishing element.

Using washers that are too small The washers sink into the foam and don't distribute pressure over an adequate area.

Over-tightening The foam is permanently crushed, and the mounting hole is weakened.

No corrosion protection The fasteners corrode due to moisture or salt water.

The wrong adhesive The adhesive isn't compatible with EVA, isn't resistant to outdoor conditions, or loses flexibility in frost.

Applying adhesive incorrectly A layer that's too thick or completely sealed may not cure properly.

Gluing a dirty or wet surface The bond loses adhesion even when the right product is used.

Leaving large gaps The hull can hit the exposed dock structure directly.

Skipping corners and ends The most exposed spots remain unprotected.

Checking after installation

Inspection right after installation

Once the work is finished, check:

  • that all screws are correctly seated
  • that the washers haven't sunk too deeply into the EVA
  • that the fenders aren't twisted or wrinkled
  • that there are no dangerous gaps between elements
  • that the corners and ends are fully covered
  • that excess adhesive has been removed
  • that the fender doesn't shift under moderate pressure
  • that no metal element protrudes above the protective surface

If adhesive was used, the system shouldn't be loaded before the required curing time has passed.

Inspection after the first few weeks of use

After the initial period of use, it's worth rechecking all the fastenings.

The dock's structure, temperature changes and the first contact with the boat can cause the materials to settle slightly.

You should check:

  • the stability of the screws
  • the condition of the washers
  • the adhesion of the glue
  • any shifting
  • dirt between the fender and the dock
  • signs of unusual pressure
  • hull contact with unprotected sections of the structure

Don't automatically tighten all the screws further. First assess whether the fender is actually loose and whether the fastening isn't already crushing the foam.

How often should fenders be inspected?

It's worth carrying out an inspection:

  • before the start of the season
  • after strong storms and intense winds
  • after being struck by a larger vessel
  • after any changes or repairs to the dock structure
  • before the winter season
  • after a period of ice
  • whenever you notice an element has shifted or loosened

A damaged or partially detached fender should be re-fastened as soon as possible. Continued use can shift the whole load onto the remaining fastening points and increase the damage.

Does a fender replace correct mooring?

No. A fender is one element of the system protecting the boat and the dock.

The best protection comes from combining:

  • correctly placed mooring lines
  • proper line tension
  • fenders hung on the hull
  • fenders mounted on the dock
  • protection of corners and ends
  • regular inspection of the whole berth

A fender shouldn't be constantly absorbing the full force exerted by an incorrectly moored vessel. Its job is to cushion contact, not to replace correctly performed mooring.
