EVA dock fenders are flexible protective elements mounted to the sides, corners and ends of docks. Their job is to cushion contact between a boat's hull and the hard structure of the dock, and to reduce the risk of scratches, scuffs and damage.
In German, products of this type are referred to as Stegfender or Hafenfender. In Polish, the most common names are: odbojnik pomostowy, odbijacz pomostowy or fender do pomostu.
Fenders made from EVA foam can be used on private docks, in marinas, yacht harbours, moorings, sailing clubs and boat rental facilities.
What are dock-mounted fenders for?
While moored, a boat moves under the influence of waves, wind, changes in water level and tension in the mooring lines. Even a correctly moored vessel can periodically touch the side of the dock.

A fender creates a flexible layer between the boat and the dock. It absorbs part of the impact energy and distributes the pressure over a larger surface.
However, it does not replace correct mooring or fenders hung on the hull. The best protection comes from combining properly placed mooring lines, boat fenders, and fenders mounted on the dock.
EVA is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. This material is used wherever a combination of flexibility, moisture resistance and impact-cushioning ability is needed.
The EVA foam used to manufacture fenders has a closed-cell structure. This means it doesn't absorb water the way a sponge or open-cell foam does.

The fenders don't require painting or impregnation. Periodic washing and checking the condition of screws, washers and glued joints is recommended instead.
One of the important advantages of EVA foam is that it doesn't leave the typical black streaks characteristic of many rubber elements and old tyres used as makeshift dock protection.
This also applies to black EVA fenders. The colour is part of the material's structure and is not an external, staining coating.
This is especially important for white and light-coloured hulls, where rubber marks are very visible and often hard to remove.
The fenders should, however, be regularly cleaned of sand, mud and other hard debris. Material caught between the fender and the hull can act abrasively regardless of the type of protection used.
In marinas, you can still find protection made from old tyres, rubber strips or randomly chosen cushioning elements. These solutions can perform a basic protective function, but they also have significant limitations.

The Y-Boom model was designed for the ends of narrow finger docks. Its specially shaped back surface allows the fender to fit onto a rounded or profiled end of the structure.
Such places are particularly exposed to impacts when approaching the berth.

Narrower models are most often used on private docks, with smaller boats, and in places with limited mounting space.
Wider fenders provide a larger protective surface and distribute pressure better. They are especially useful for larger vessels and in heavily used marinas.
The most important thing, however, is setting the correct mounting height. The fender should be positioned in the zone of actual contact with the hull, taking into account changes in water level and different types of mooring boats.

The primary installation method is mechanical fastening using screws or bolts matched to the dock material.
Wide washers should be used, as they distribute pressure and limit how deeply the fasteners sink into the foam. Screws should not be over-tightened, since excessive pressure can permanently deform the material.

The manufacturer recommends additionally using adhesive wherever the surface, material and dock construction allow it.
The adhesive increases the stability of the mounting and creates an additional bond across a large part of the fender's back surface. This means loads aren't carried solely through the points where the screws are located.

The adhesive must be intended for outdoor use, resistant to moisture and changing weather conditions, and remain flexible at low temperatures.
It should also be compatible with both the EVA foam and the material the dock is made of. An adhesion test is recommended before installation.
The adhesive should be applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Some products require application in vertical strips or spots so they can cure properly under the influence of moisture.

Particular caution should be exercised in places exposed to ice pressure or the movement of large ice floes. The fender protects against contact between the boat and the dock, but it is not designed to withstand the pressure of large masses of ice.
