EVA Dock Fenders – What They Are and Why They're Worth Using

What are EVA dock fenders and why are they worth using?

EVA dock fenders are flexible protective elements mounted to the sides, corners and ends of docks. Their job is to cushion contact between a boat's hull and the hard structure of the dock, and to reduce the risk of scratches, scuffs and damage.

In German, products of this type are referred to as Stegfender or Hafenfender. In Polish, the most common names are: odbojnik pomostowy, odbijacz pomostowy or fender do pomostu.

Fenders made from EVA foam can be used on private docks, in marinas, yacht harbours, moorings, sailing clubs and boat rental facilities.

What are dock-mounted fenders for?

While moored, a boat moves under the influence of waves, wind, changes in water level and tension in the mooring lines. Even a correctly moored vessel can periodically touch the side of the dock.

If the side of the dock is made of wood, steel, aluminium or concrete, direct contact can lead to:

  • scratching or abrading the hull
  • damage to the paint/gelcoat finish
  • point impacts to the hull
  • contact with protruding screws or sharp edges
  • damage to the dock structure itself

A fender creates a flexible layer between the boat and the dock. It absorbs part of the impact energy and distributes the pressure over a larger surface.

However, it does not replace correct mooring or fenders hung on the hull. The best protection comes from combining properly placed mooring lines, boat fenders, and fenders mounted on the dock.

Why is EVA foam suitable for dock fenders?

EVA is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. This material is used wherever a combination of flexibility, moisture resistance and impact-cushioning ability is needed.

The EVA foam used to manufacture fenders has a closed-cell structure. This means it doesn't absorb water the way a sponge or open-cell foam does.

The most important properties of EVA fenders are:

  • flexibility and impact-cushioning ability
  • low water absorption
  • resistance to moisture and water splashes
  • suitability for both fresh and salt water
  • resistance to changing weather conditions
  • easy to clean
  • low weight
  • can be cut and adapted to the dock structure

The fenders don't require painting or impregnation. Periodic washing and checking the condition of screws, washers and glued joints is recommended instead.

Do EVA fenders leave marks on the hull?

One of the important advantages of EVA foam is that it doesn't leave the typical black streaks characteristic of many rubber elements and old tyres used as makeshift dock protection.

This also applies to black EVA fenders. The colour is part of the material's structure and is not an external, staining coating.

This is especially important for white and light-coloured hulls, where rubber marks are very visible and often hard to remove.

The fenders should, however, be regularly cleaned of sand, mud and other hard debris. Material caught between the fender and the hull can act abrasively regardless of the type of protection used.

EVA fenders versus rubber fenders and old tyres

In marinas, you can still find protection made from old tyres, rubber strips or randomly chosen cushioning elements. These solutions can perform a basic protective function, but they also have significant limitations.

Rubber and tyres can:

  • leave black marks on hulls
  • heat up in the sun
  • have an uneven or dirty surface
  • create a visually inconsistent protection system
  • trap water and dirt
  • be harder to arrange attractively along a long stretch of dock

EVA fenders make it possible to create a level, orderly and uniform protective zone. Individual elements can be mounted side by side, protecting the whole berth, the corners and the ends of the finger docks.

Where can EVA dock fenders be used?

EVA fenders can be mounted on, among others:

  • private docks
  • floating docks
  • fixed wooden docks
  • steel and aluminium structures
  • concrete waterfronts
  • dolphins and guide structures
  • personal watercraft berths
  • the ends of finger docks
  • dock corners

They can be used both for a single private boat and in large marinas serving many different vessels.

For heavily used facilities, the fender width, placement of mounting points and mounting height should be matched to the type of mooring boats and the dock's construction.

What types of dock fenders are available?

A complete dock protection system should protect not only the straight sides of the dock, but also the corners and the ends of the finger docks.

Linear fenders

Linear fenders are mounted along the straight sides of the dock. They can be arranged individually or side by side, forming a continuous protective surface.

The MARINA system includes, among others:

  • MARINA 8 – 100 × 8 × 6 cm
  • MARINA 12 – 100 × 12 × 6 cm
  • MARINA 20 – 100 × 20 × 6 cm

All models are 6 cm thick. They differ in the width of the protective surface.

Corner fenders

Dock corners are particularly exposed to hull contact, because the impact force can concentrate on a small surface.

Corner fenders protect two adjoining edges and keep the protection continuous between straight sections.

Y-Boom fenders

The Y-Boom model was designed for the ends of narrow finger docks. Its specially shaped back surface allows the fender to fit onto a rounded or profiled end of the structure.

Such places are particularly exposed to impacts when approaching the berth.

How to choose the right fender model?

The choice of fender depends mainly on:

  • the size and type of boat
  • the dock's construction
  • how heavily the berth is used
  • the freeboard height
  • the point where the boat most often touches the dock
  • the available mounting surface

Narrower models are most often used on private docks, with smaller boats, and in places with limited mounting space.

Wider fenders provide a larger protective surface and distribute pressure better. They are especially useful for larger vessels and in heavily used marinas.

The most important thing, however, is setting the correct mounting height. The fender should be positioned in the zone of actual contact with the hull, taking into account changes in water level and different types of mooring boats.

How are EVA fenders installed?

The primary installation method is mechanical fastening using screws or bolts matched to the dock material.

Wide washers should be used, as they distribute pressure and limit how deeply the fasteners sink into the foam. Screws should not be over-tightened, since excessive pressure can permanently deform the material.

The fastening method should be adapted to the type of surface:

  • for wood, suitable construction screws are used
  • for steel and aluminium, self-drilling screws or bolted connections
  • for concrete, suitable anchors or mounting dowels
  • for plastics and composites, fasteners matched to the specific dock's construction

Fastening should be done into a stable structural element, not just a thin cladding layer.

Is it worth using adhesive during installation?

The manufacturer recommends additionally using adhesive wherever the surface, material and dock construction allow it.

The adhesive increases the stability of the mounting and creates an additional bond across a large part of the fender's back surface. This means loads aren't carried solely through the points where the screws are located.

Adhesives that can be used include, among others:

  • flexible mounting adhesives based on silane-modified polymers, known as MS Polymer or SMP
  • suitable contact adhesives based on synthetic rubber

The adhesive must be intended for outdoor use, resistant to moisture and changing weather conditions, and remain flexible at low temperatures.

It should also be compatible with both the EVA foam and the material the dock is made of. An adhesion test is recommended before installation.

The adhesive should be applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Some products require application in vertical strips or spots so they can cure properly under the influence of moisture.

Can fenders stay on the dock during winter?

Correctly installed EVA fenders can remain on the dock all year round.

Before the winter season, you should check:

  • the condition of the screws and washers
  • the stability of the mounting
  • the adhesion of the adhesive
  • the condition of the dock structure
  • any cuts or damage to the foam

Particular caution should be exercised in places exposed to ice pressure or the movement of large ice floes. The fender protects against contact between the boat and the dock, but it is not designed to withstand the pressure of large masses of ice.

How to clean dock fenders?

For regular cleaning, water, a soft brush or sponge, and a mild detergent are usually enough.

You should not use:

  • aggressive solvents
  • sharp scrapers
  • wire brushes
  • agents that could damage the foam's structure

Do EVA fenders come with material documentation?

MARINA dock fenders are proprietary products of CREA-FORM. Their designs have been registered and are protected within the European Union by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Design registration protects the product's appearance. However, it is not a quality certificate or a materials test report.

The EVA materials used in manufacturing come with technical documentation and laboratory test reports. The available documentation includes, among others:

  • an MSDS material safety data sheet
  • a RoHS compliance test report
  • tests for the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
  • tests for halogen content
  • SGS and CTI laboratory reports

The documentation can be made available to business customers, marinas and trading partners upon reasonable request.

EVA fenders as part of a complete marina protection system

A well-designed dock protection system should protect every place where contact with a boat can occur.

Linear fenders protect the sides of the dock, corner models protect the edges, and Y-Boom fenders shield the ends of the finger docks.

Using a single system provides:

  • a level, predictable protective surface
  • a consistent look across the whole marina
  • the ability to replace individual elements
  • protection tailored to different parts of the dock
  • less reliance on randomly sourced rubber elements and old tyres

EVA dock fenders are a solution for owners of single berths as well as for marina managers protecting dozens or hundreds of metres of dock.

Summary

EVA dock fenders create a flexible protective layer between a boat's hull and the hard structure of the dock. They help reduce the risk of scratches, scuffs and point impacts, while making it possible to attractively protect long stretches of berths.

EVA foam doesn't absorb water like an open-cell material, is easy to clean, and doesn't leave the typical black marks characteristic of many rubber products — even when the fender itself is black.
